Listen To This #6 | GoozerNation

I have a subscription to eMusic, which means that I pay $20 a month and get 3 to 5 full CDs depending on the artists. This setup isn't for everyone but it works well for me because $20 a month on music is worth it and if it means I get more than 2 CDs for that much money I'm super pumped. eMusic also tends to have lesser known, less popular and eccentric sounding bands for cheaper than the mainstream artists, which is perfect for what I like to listen to. This is all a lead up to the fact that the artists in today's Listen To This are my purchases from last month. Get your headphones ready.

Oh man, who is going to be featured in this month's article?! You need to know and I need to tell you.

Supermarket Management Review (Android)

Over the last couple months I've noticed a new type of game emerging almost exclusively on the smartphone market. These games focus on management skills and the ability to strategically queue up actions to maximize profits and customer satisfaction. My first taste of this was with Airport Mania and soon after that came Pretty Pet Salon and then Delicious. While these game aren't as deep as console offerings they do manage to spice up gameplay and really satisfy my desire for fresh content on mobile platforms. The latest game in this genre is Supermarket Management.

Extra Life 2011

Because this cause is so great I'm actually going to post the whole article here but you should still head over to GoozerNation to check it (and click on the donation and join links) and all our other awesome articles out. Thanks.

It's that time of year again to register for Extra Life. What's Extra Life? Well, Extra Life is an opportunity to raise money for children's hospitals by playing video games.

That's right, it's time to play video games to help sick kids get better. But how is that possible, you ask? It's similar to a Relay for Life or any other marathon that raises money for charity. Only a little bit better because the marathon involves playing video games for 24 hours straight instead of running. Sign up here and start collecting donations from friends, family, and complete strangers on the street. Then at 8 a.m. on October 15th it's time to play games for 24 hours (if that date doesn't work for you, you can always do it on a day that does).

Extra Life is a wonderful program put together by the guys over at Sarcasatic Gamer and 100% of the proceeds are donated to the Children's Miracle Network. In fact, the money you raise goes to the CMN Hospital of your choice. Click here learn more about Extra Life. And if you're feeling super awesome, donate to me or join the GN team and help us reach our goal.

10% Off Pre-Order of Rock of Ages on Steam

Steam is taking pre-orders for Atlus' new game, Rock of Ages. If you pre-order now you will receive 10% off.

When does it come out and how much will it cost? Find out here, and watch the trailer too.

Back Again

It's been a long time since I've posted. I'm going to try and be better about that. You're going to notice my article archive has been updated to include all the GoozerNation articles I've written but not posted here. Also be on the lookout for a little redesign coming soon. Hopefully you'll like it.

Gaming on the Cheap - gog.com | GoozerNation

I'm one of those budget conscious gamers that generally waits a few months before buying new games. There are a few ways around this: Goozex, of course, is my first choice (using points instead of cash is very pleasing to my wallet), Amazon often has great deals for pre-orders or recently released games, Steam is always awesome and pretty cheap, Best Buy will have some good deals too (last month I got Oblivion, Duke Nukem, and Child of Eden for $80), but GOG.com is where I go when I want classic PC games for dirt cheap.

Find out which series is on sale here.

Guitar Hero 5 Mobile: Free on Amazon App Store | GoozerNation

Guitar Hero has always been a franchise with a lot of buzz surrounding it. It was the first rhythm based game series to really draw mainstream attention with its super solid first two entries, though it eventually became a magnet for more negative attention and the prototype for the Activision "milk games dry and toss them" business model.

Is this another instance of overusing the tried and true franchise? Check out my impression.

Looking Back for the Future | GoozerNation

Every year there's a cry from the gaming community for more original IPs. Generally, I am among the throng of vocal gamers hoping for something more inspired than, "run from point A to point B while shooting everything that moves," but every few years there are some sequels that get me more excited than any original IP could. This year a couple of games are really getting me pumped up: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception.

Haven't played them? Looking for some nostalgia? Read on.

Colosseum for Android Announcement and Screenshots | GoozerNation

Gamevil is on a roll lately. Games like Zenonia 3 and Baseball Superstars II being released for free on the Android Marketplace (and being great games) have really bolstered their reputation in my mind. Colosseum has now found it's way to the Android platform and it looks ready to sink it's claws into the mobile (phone) gaming crowd.

What's Colosseum all about? I'm glad you asked. Find out here.

Baseball Superstars II Free for Android | GoozerNation

I've mentioned before that Baseball Superstars on Android is my favorite Gamevil series of games. I don't even enjoy baseball but something about this arcadey simulation hits the sweet spot for me. And now Gamevil has just released BS II on the Market for free and it really shines.

What's so great about it? Let me tell you.

What makes FPSs Fun? | GoozerNation

Competitive multiplayer used to hold very little value to me as a gamer. I was always much more interested in the single player experience and RPGs were the best providers of that. As the technology of each new console generation moves forward other genres better embrace the grandiose storylines and complex characters that RPGs made popular. There were, and definitely are now, genre bending games like Deus Ex that really sunk their hooks into me. But the biggest impact I've seen are the level up mechanics implemented in competitive fragfests. This has given me a reason to be excited about playing First Person Shooters but also makes me wonder what makes them so fun.

Want to know what I discovered? Of course you do.

Zenonia 3 FREE on the Android Marketplace | GoozerNation

For those that aren't familiar with the Korean development house Gamevil, they make a lot of high quality addictive games for mobile devices, my favorite being Baseball Superstars. Peggle Review (Android) | GoozerNation

My first experience with Peggle was with a brick of a phone that I had in 2006 through Sprint and it had me hooked right from the get go. Since then I've played it on Mac and tried the demo when it came out on XBLA. I've always preferred it in the handheld version though and the latest version on my HTC Inspire does not disappoint.

Should you get addicted to Peggle?

Palindrome Syndrome

Points for palindromes
And not much else
Your lyrics lack the poetry
That once punched through my brain
To something deeper
More real
Spiritual

I'll never sing again
No notes will ever pass my lips
Again
Up my throat
And against my chokes
Expel
More than what makes it
Past your mouth
And if we were whales
This beach
Would be sinking
Into the end
I'll never sing again

California sunshine
Drowns the salty blue
Earth(quakes)
Torn asunder
And pulled under
Brother rock
And roll lifestyles
Modern day
Atlantians with one exception:
No treasure just
Corpses

Stories you can't help
But hold
They lick the words right out of your mouth
From the forth
Reaching back
Stringing screams across steel traps
These woods are a prison
This world is a trick
If I trip
Up now
They're going to eat me alive
Don't look
Right back now
I hope they eat you alive

Digestive tracts
Lined with poison glands
Membranes ready for
Their next meal
Let me get this straight
You forgot your place
And wound up outside
Looking up
Wondering what you've done
To end up here
Well
You've dug a hole
To lie in
Sedimental blankets
The graverobbers found
Nothing of worth

Gold stars for stutters
You've choked to
Death
Doesn't mean I have to
I'm still drawing breaths
Painting possibilities you passed
Sentimentalities induce sickness
And I'm through with that
Raise your hands if you feel like you've won-

Well, my stomach feels weak.
I think that you're done.

Listen To This 4: Taking Back Sunday | GoozerNation

Has it really been almost two months since I last wrote a music review? I won't bombard you with excuses as to why it's been so long, let's just jump to the good stuff.

The 5th full length studio album from Taking Back Sunday is self-titled and set to drop on June 28th. With a single already released, El Paso, and a tour schedule that brings them to me on June 17th, I am very excited. So this episode of Listen To This is going to be focused solely on Taking Back Sunday. Here we go...

Want to know what TBS songs you should listen to? The list is here.

Value Bin Review - Battle Fantasia

I've never really been good at fighting games but I love them all the same. Something about conquering a list of moves and unlocking characters while playing through a fragmented storyline has always appealed to me. Alas, I tend to appreciate the Mortal Kombat fighting games because of simpler combos and a sense of forgiveness and more control. Fighters in the vein of Street Fighter just tend to frustrate me with the convoluted combo system and precision required to pull off any move. Battle Fantasia definitely falls into the Street Fighter category.

Grave Half Full

An empty well
Bottomless
No lights pierce its depths
An abandoned barn
Set against
The black backdrop of a new moon sky

Unmarked graves
Beneath the dirt
Haunt the voices of the babes

They sing:

“No grass grows
The flowers died
Wilted petals by our sides

Even if we could come out and play
No one wants us anyway
We lost our heads
Now we sleep
We found ourselves
Within these dreams

Where we live
Where we live
Where we live”

A wasteland trashed
Desolate
No life found in its grips

Beneath the sand
Old and dry
Bones call out and they cry

They cry:

“No grass grows
The flowers died
Wilted petals by our sides

Even if we could come out and play
No one wants us anyway
We lost our heads
Now we sleep
We found ourselves
Within these dreams

Where we live
Where we live
Where we live”

A desert isle
Up in flames
One small hut still remains

On the shore
Scattered heads
Memories of our dead

They scream:

“No grass grows
The flowers died
Wilted petals by our sides
Even if we could come out and play
No one wants us anyway
We lost our limbs
Now we sing
We found ourselves
Within these dreams

Where we live

We lost our limbs
Now we sing
We find ourselves
Within a dream

Where we live
Where we live

We lost our limbs
Now we sing
Lifted voices high and proud
With your love we’ll make it out

And we’ll live
And we’ll live
And we’ll live”

Listen To This #3 | GoozerNation

We're back for number 3 in the Listen To This series! The Game Changers tour, headlined by A Day To Remember, just came through my city. Although I didn't get to go see the show, I was a fan of the lineup. There's only about a week left of the tour, but if you like what I recommend then you'll be prepared to see any of these guys next time they stop in your city. Perhaps you're even lucky enough to have them still headed your way on this tour, you can see them now!

Radiant Historia - Linear Time Travel | GoozerNation

Time travel has always captured our imagination as a society. From classic movies (Back to the Future), books (The Time Machine and plenty of others) and television (Futurama or anything on the Sci-Fi channel). Video games have had a few series that have tried to put the time space continuum into our hands; Chrono Trigger instantly comes to mind as a game that did it right. The problem with time travel is that it's hard to do correctly or in a believable way; either there's going to be paradoxes or contrived plot points to overcome those paradoxes. Radiant Historia is an RPG that attempts to bring a brand new time traveling experience to the DS and although it is a sound entry from Atlus, it doesn't quite hit the mark.

Skyrim Early Launch | GoozerNation

A bit late but this was an April Fools article I wrote for GoozerNation:

A recent phone interview with Bethesda's Community Manager, Mae Dupp, has left us with quite a sensational feeling in our guts. It seems that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will be in our hands much sooner than we thought, albeit it may not be as happy an occasion as we once thought.

Listen To This Too | GoozerNation

Welcome to episode 2 of Listen to This. Last week we talked about guys that can shatter glass with their vocals and this week we'll talk about genres… and how I don't believe in them.

The era we live in now is full of products that blur the line between different functionalities and mediums. Take smartphones for example: calling and texting have been standard for cell phones for a while now but we have the added convenience of the internet, games, email, and so much more on the go. I see music the same way -- sure an artist may fit into one or another genre, but styles have become so muddled and merged it's hard to tell where one ends and another begins. This week we'll look at bands that don't believe in falling into any particular sound.

Incepticons: More Than Meets The Mind

Am I dreaming
Or is this real
I can’t remember
The last time
I saw you here

All the pieces
To this puzzle
Have fallen into place
Every word
You whisper
Invades my brain
And I know
These thoughts
Are not my own
But I can’t help
Feeling
Like singing
Or screaming
Them all
Out
Loud

Build me a coffin
Of this city
So I can rest in peace
Pieces of skyline
Bend and break
Entomb me within
Walls of stone and
Steel girders
Line my lead casket
Dirt domed lid
Dipped beneath the Earth
Food fit for worms

Muscle memory
Replaced with
Robotic reassurance
Capabilities beyond
My control.
Desperation
Traded for
Protection
Perfection
Servitude?

Listen to This | GoozerNation

Welcome to Listen To This. I'm hoping this becomes a weekly, bi-weekly, or at least a monthly column in which I introduce you to music you might not know and should definitely give a chance. I listen to a lot of music and I'm sure there will be artists you're already familiar with and artists that aren't your taste but I'm hoping to cover everything and that you'll be able to pick up something new that you enjoy. The way it works is that I will give you the name of an artist and album (as well as the year it was released), a very quick blurb about the sound/style, and then three tracks to test drive. If you don't like any of the three tracks then this album is most likely not for you.

Guillotine Whalers

Busy as a bee
I should have left you for the
Birds
Vultures
Like beer
Desire
Death of the Liver

Baby
If you live through
This, it's the same story
Tomorrow
And the next day and the next day and the next day
And the next
Until your end
Of the bargain is upheld
Hold up
The world upon your
Shoulders
Doesn't look like the
Earth I remember
Don't
Let it slipslide
Down your back
Like that black dress
Breaking waves on
The carpet of
His bedroom floor
Rugs like the rising tide

Cargo nets are not safety
Clinging to
Driftwood won't bring you to
Shore and
Seashells
Won't call the merfolk
Swim with the fishes
And don't come up for air
You won't need it where you're
Headed.

(Anti)Gone Fishing

Say farewell
From afar and
Let the dead bury the dead
Unfit for foxholes and
Bird nests
Underwater clouds
Carry the current
Upstream
Downtown deserts
And dusty dirt roads
Decorate the desolate
Jungle
An empty tundra

Please excuse the
Fear I feel
My Faith is fighting
To show itself
Touched
I'm undone and
Breathless
Breathing gets harder
As the miles get longer
Quickly quickly
I crawl
On hand and knee
Humbled to be
Seen by one
Such as yourself
Your
Grace
Knows no bounds

Stop
Drop
And roll
Your a forest fire
But I'm out of control

Come Again

Be still
And know your God

Awake and arise
When the time comes
Will I have
Enough oil
To burn this lamp
Don't let me be a fool
I want to see your face
Please don't say
Please don't say
I knew you not
You know me not
Don't look away

Am I clean
Am I clean
Am I clean
Show unto me
Where the lepers lay
Send me away
Outcast
I am
Refuse and waste
Show me
Show me
Father here's my gift
Am I clean
Am I clean
Am I clean

Remnant Knight Closed Beta Review | Goozernation

MMOs, for the most part, are all the same. They've got their schtick that they stick to: talk to NPC 'A' who sends you on a fetch quest for Item 'X', which is either near or being held by monster 'Z'. There's a story in there somewhere, something about the world being in danger of being overrun by this evil or that evil and you need to find a way to stop it. Character classes include rogues, knights, mages, etc. and if you can't figure out where to go then you haven't been reading what the NPCs are telling you. GameSamba hopes to shake things up.

Butterfly flutters keep you afloat
Or they were supposed to
But I can't see your wings waving
Hello to me
Or even goodbye

Where's your heart?
I keep mine on my wrist
So I don't lose track of where it is
Or where it's going

Where's your heartbeat?
I think mine stopped
When I saw a picture of you

Where's your heart?
I thought it would light up the screen
And my face

Where's your heartbeat?
Little hummingbird drummer
Beat beat beating away

Men are meant to
Protect

A man doesn't sob
Uncontrollably
Into his open palms

Where's your heart?
You took a piece of mine

I'm not a man
Just your daddy

Wrecked

Virtue stolen by degrees
And inches of skin
It's getting awfully hot in this room
His sin soaking through the
Shower curtain wrapped around
Her neck

Don't ever tell

I'd slit a throat
To save a life

At the end of hell
His bloodless body
Slips from my grip

Nobody will ever tell

Claustrophobic tendencies
In an empty room
Banging down the door
At the end of the hall

Meet me in the bathroom
Suspicious glares from the
Exit signs
Escape won't be easy
But it never is
Nobody said a thing
About this to me

We all know
What happened was wrong
We're all here
To help you stand strong

Gluttony

Full to bursting
I can't quench my thirst
For anything

Our addictions consume us
Indulgence gone too far
Moderation escapes me
Surrendering to sin

Enough is enough
I'm full to bursting
But I can't quench my thirst

You'll be the last thing I see
Before I lose myself
Sightless
I've lost the sun
Stuck face down
In my own filth
I'll never tame this beast

Enough is enough

Lust (And Keates)

Lovers need not tell their sorrows
Pale were the sweet lips I saw
Pale were the lips I kissed
And fair the form I floated with
Round about this storm

We let our appetites
Compromise our reason
We whet our appetites
With the taste of skin
But I want what I want
And I'm gonna get it
Even if Arthur kills me
I'm gonna kiss Guinevere

Limbo

No faith in fields of green
Our works mean nothing
Redemption
Unattainable
Our lives in limbo
Though we've done no wrong
Turned from Heaven
We now search for God

Without baptism
That portal of faith
That we embrace
We lack hope
For anything better than this

The Descent

Shards of shattered glass scattered around
Bent and broken limbs
Mixed with missing teeth
And bits of bloody bones break the skin
Of our bodies
Flung far from the twisted metal frame
Wrapped around the telephone pole

A COLLISION
At ninety miles per hour
On the back roads
And I'm going straight to Hell, oh well
Oh well
I'll meet you there

Gaming On The Cheap - PS+ | GoozerNation

My gift to my wife for Valentine's Day 2010 was a PS3 and, being relatively broke, we've relied heavily on Gamefly and Goozex to get the games we want to play. When Sony announced the Playstation Plus service that offered free games (among other things) for just $50 dollars a year, we were sold. Which brings us to the point of this article: Gaming On The Cheap (or in this case free).

Sticky Bones

Hold your horses
At gun point
Watch your mouth
Or I swear I'll seal it shut
With the glue from their bones

You've gone and
I haven't felt this right
Since the day I buried you
Six feet under the scavengers
[The hunt is on]

You looked so good
Dressed in... death
You wore it well
Like a suit of spades
Digging up your insides
I tried to hold on too long

Vomit bleeding on the sidewalk
I've seen this before
Bad dreams and sad eyes
(Sorry thoughts and a slanted smile)
It's a broken heart
[I'm holding it hostage
A prisoner of war]
And this
This is a stick up
Hold em up high
This
This is a hold up
Stick em up high

I thought I was sad to see you go

I was wrong

With a bang bang
And a bang bang
Bang bang
I'm out
